CM45 is a medium carbon steel is used when greater strength and hardness is desired than in the 'as rolled' condition. Extreme size accuracy, straightness and concentricity combine to minimize wear in high speed applications. Turned, ground and polished.

Component parts for vechiles, shafts, bushings, crankshafts, connecting rods and parts for the machine building industry and steel for axes, knives, hammers, etc.
Physical properties (average values) at ambient temperature
Modulus of elasticity [103 x N/mm2]: 190-210
Density [g/cm3]: 7.84
Soft Annealing
Heat to 650-700oC, cool slowly. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 207.
Hardening
Harden from a temperature of 820-850oC, 830-860oC followed by water or oil quenching.
Normalizing
Normalizing temperature (oC): 840-880oC.
Tempering
Tempering temperature: 550-680oC.
Forging
Hot forming temperature: 1100-850oC.
Machinability
Machinability is good, rated at 80% that of the AISI 1112 alloy used as a 100% machining rated steel.
